The Swan Passage

The month of June brought about the swan voyage of the good ship Evening Star, a 45' trimaran. The vessel was moored in the port of Savusavu, Fiji Islands and needed to be delivered to Bundaberg, Australia. Our journey was to be the last passage for her Captain as the boat is going up for sale. It would also be the last passage for her Crew, as James momentarily departs from his swashbuckling ways to make studies at the University of Hawai'i.

The crew included James "Jimmy" and Bob "Captain Dark." Together we would sail just under 2000 miles non-stop to our port in the Land Down Under. The conditions idealic. The Southeast trade winds would push Evening Star all the way to Australia as we sat back and watched the world go by. Our biggest concerns would be the wind and what to eat. Ticking away the days we would find life aboard to go buy very easily. We would talk about women, the weather, and food. We would watch the stars each night and the swells in the day. Though sometimes just when things are perfect a bada-bing, bada-bang, bada-boom sneaks around the corner. Afterall, the best laid plans of mice and men of times gang aft aglay.

The following collection of videos tell the story of Evening Star's Swan Passage. Please click on the link below to view part one: "Never begin a passage on a Friday"

Congratulations on the U of Hawaii - how exciting! It's great to have an update on your adventure (and especially nice to know that you're not lost out there in the vast sea!). I can't wait to hear more about what's in store for you in the coming months. Keep us updated and be sure to let us know when you'll be in the Buckeye State!

P.S. I like your new nickname!

Hey "Jimmy",

I was hoping to hear from you about Hawaii instead of finding it out on the blog. Just kidding! I am so excite for you, so my letter must have done some good! I noticed you sorta picked up an accent too! Hope to see you back in Oxford some time soon.

Hi James,

I was a bit worried when you hadn't updated in awhile, so I loved the video showing just how hearty you actually are! It's exciting to hear about your work at the Univ. of Hawaii (much closer to the beaches there than in Ohio...) Your videos are the next best thing to being there for us wanderers at heart - we get to watch the wanderers in action! It sounds like you will be in one place for at least a little while come fall, so let us all know what goes on, and tell us about college life in Hawaii.

Take good care,

Kathleen Flanagan

Wow, that was a lot of precipitation. Hope you didn't have to endure many of those storms while out to see! I can't wait to see Part III...

How's school?

Part III - is coming shortly. There may be a pro-longed period as classes begin this week. But it's coming. And there's so much more. I just have trouble finding the time.

Hey James,

I just learned about the quake - sounds like people are safe and no one was killed, thank goodness. But send us an update so we know you are ok. We're thinking about you. Hope your studies are going well, I suspect they are keeping you too busy to write much.

Take care,

Kathleen

The Earthquake made a shake, but didn't knock anything major down on this island. School is busy and perhaps more challenging as I seem to have become less academic in the last year. Nonetheless, academia is sucking me back. I'm beginning to feel smart. MIT watch out! UH is coming.
